The Institute is recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO) by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The Institute has formed the AIIPMR - All India Institute Of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Society for promotion of Medical Research (estd. 1977) which is recognized by the Dept. of Science & Technology.

    The Institute derives technical assistance from several agencies viz; Indian Institute of Technology (Mumbai), Composite Product Development Centre (Hyderabad), Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Mumbai), WHO, Indian Council of Medical Research, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Wadia Children's Hospital, COH, BLP, BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation hospitals, Railway Hospitals, Government Hospitals, special schools, normal schools, geriatric homes, paraplegic homes, Fellowship of the Physically Hanicapped, Panchesheel Handicapped Trust, spastic society, National Association for Equal Opportunities for the Handicapped.
