PHYSIOTHERAPY DEPARTMENT

The Physiotherapy department serves patients referred from OPD and Inpatients of the Institute.

The Department consists of the following staff

1. Patient care services & Specialized assessment:

A Therapeutic program is planned after a thorough Physical Evaluation, and carried out in the following sections as per the nature of intervention required

  • A. Pain Management Section
  • B. Adult & Restorative Therapy Section
  • C. Biomechanics & Gait Training Section
  • D. Pediatrics Section
  • E. Balance Assessment & Training Section

A. PAIN MANAGEMENT SECTION

Evaluation of pain and altered function including subjective and objective assessment, followed by customized therapeutic package i.e., patient education, choice of physical agents, exercises and ergonomic advice for the prevention of recurrence of pain.

B. ADULT & RESTORATIVE SECTION

Adults with neuromotor conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain damage, spinal cord injuries, progressive neuro-muscular disorders, etc. are assessed and physiotherapeutic treatment plan is carried out in co-ordination with Rehabilitation team members.Post-operative therapeutic programme aiming at restoration of function supported by specialized assessment and training.

C. BIOMECHANICS & GAIT TRAINING SECTION

Observational assessment of Gait with Persons with disabilities and biomechanics of Gait and movement function with or without appliances are analysed specially with respect to choice of suitable appliance and its usage. Therapeutic exercises are used prior to training for improvement of gait and movement function.

D. PEADIATRIC SECTION

Children with orthopaedic and neuromotor deficits are evaluated and therapeutic interventions are planned aiming at maximal functional independence including training with aids & appliances whenever necessary. Parents are also involved in the therapeutic management of the children and advised carryover of functional training at home as well as donning and doffing, and care of aids & appliances.

E. BALANCE ASSESSMENT AND TRAINING SECTION

Elderly  Persons with Disabilities who suffer from balance impairment are assessed for identification. Intervention is helpful for prevention of falls and maintenance of functional independence.

In addition, the Physiotherapy department staff is a part of team for all outreach programs conducted by the Institute where Physiotherapy services are required, such as – Disability camps and Rehabilitation camps.

Specialized Assessments

The following specialized assessments are done in Physiotherapy department, which form a baseline for therapy and various other interventions i.e., Botox, Surgery, etc.

  • a. Instrumented Gait Analysis
  • b. Foot Pressure Mapping
  • c. Isokinetic Exercise Testing
  • d. Balance Assessment
  • e. Exercise tolerance Testing and Spirometry
  • f. Disability Assessment

2. Teaching / Training:

Department conducts a full time Diploma in Rehabilitation Course for qualified Physiotherapists of 1-Year duration,  affiliated to SNDT Women’s University Mumbai & Masters in Physiotherapy (MPTh)Degree course of 3 years duration affiliated to MUHS Nashik.

3. Research Activities:

Research is conducted in the Department on a regular basis.
21 Staff guided {6 MPTh & 15 DR (PT)} Research Projects are completed every year and submitted to the respective university. Scientific paper based on same is presented in National Level Conferences. Some of the areas of Research are:

  • Effect of Physiotherapeutic measure in various Neuro-Musculo Skeletal disorders.
  • Balance Assessment & Training in various in normal aging population as well as persons with Neuro-Musculo Skeletal disorders.
  • Gait Analysis
  • Therapeutic Bio feedback.
  • Yogasanas for testing & training in normal Neuro-motor control.
  • Studies in quality of life in persons with disability.
