Training Programmes

A high quality training programme is conducted through the large number of Degree, Diploma and Certificate Courses in the Institute at Undergraduate and Post-graduate Level, affiliated to National Board of Examinations, Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) and S.N.D.T Women’s University. In this Academic Year 2011-12, the process of on line application process has been successfully carried out for Courses with the idea of making Rehabilitation Education easily accessible to all. The main objective of the Academic programmes of the Institute is to produce highly Skilled Rehabilitation Professionals who will take up the ever burgeoning load of the Disabled Community and who are at par with the best professionals in the world.

The academic section comprises of the Academic In-charge, the Deputy Academic In-charges (Heads of Departments of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Prosthetics & Orthotics) and clerical staff. In addition, to in-house faculty, external lecturers are also engaged for various subjects.

Courses in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR)

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation emerged as a medical specialty after World War II and since then it has gained international acclaim and is one of the most sought after specialties today. Government of India started this institute for the development of this specialty half a decade ago and today the Institute is training specialist doctors in this novel discipline.

Even though PMR is considered a Non-surgical branch the world over, the Institute, along with many other medical colleges in the country is imparting the training as a Surgical Specialty. This is because the patient profile seen in PMR Departments in India differs considerably with sequelae of many diseases like Poliomyelitis, Hansen’s Disease, etc. which need Surgical Intervention.

1. Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR)

This course is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik.

Course Objectives:

To impart a thorough and comprehensive training to a Medical Graduate so that at the end of this course the trainee should be able :

  1. To diagnose, evaluate, treat, and rehabilitate a person who is suffering from a temporary or permanent disability.
  2. To plan, monitor, supervise and lead the execution of rehabilitation plan through an integrated, multi-disciplinary team.
  3. To undertake research, teach medical and paramedical personnel, educate the person with disability, family, rehabilitation team members and community, and be well versed with recent advances, administrative, financial, ethical and legal aspects related to the specialty.

Eligibility:

The candidate

  1. Should have passed MBBS Degree Examination of recognized University
  2. Completed one year compulsory rotatory Internship in a hospital recognized by the MCI.
  3. Should have full registration with the State Medical Council/Medical Council of India.

Selection

50% of seats are reserved for DGHS quota filled through All-India common entrance test and the other 50% for Maharashtra state CET.

Duration: Three years full time programme in Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Designation: Admitted candidates work in the capacity of Junior Resident doctors as per Central Govt. guidelines.

Duties:

  1. Out-door and in-door patient management.
  2. Surgical training is a must and they have to undertake pre-operative evaluations, post-operative care and minor OT procedures.
  3. Thesis has to be submitted to the faculty of MUHS as part of completion of curriculum.
  4. Participation in Academic activities is necessary with seminar and journal club presentations, case conferences and interaction with faculty.

2. Diplomate of National Board (DNB) in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR)

This course is affiliated to the National Board of Examinations (NBE), New Delhi.

Course Objectives:

  1. To impart training in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation that includes treatment modalities in Physical Medicine, Diagnostic application of physical agents, Principles of Therapeutic exercises, Electro-diagnosis and EMG.
  2. To train the medical graduate to become proficient in Disability Evaluation, Rehabilitation management, Prosthetics and Orthotics, Psychosocial and Psychiatric problems.
  3. At the end of the course the student would become well versed in the Principles of team approach as well as Organization and Administration of rehabilitation facilities.
  4. Research as well as teaching would be part of the curriculum.

Eligibility: Same as MD (PMR)

Selection: Candidates who have passed NBE-CET are selected through centralized counseling conducted by NBE at New Delhi.

Number of seats available: 3

Duration: Three years full time programme, commencing in January.

Designation: Admitted candidates work in the capacity of Junior Resident Doctors as per Central Govt. guidelines.

Duties: Same as MD (PMR) students.

3. Master of Physiotherapy (MPTh)

This course is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik.

The goal of training of post-graduate candidate in the respective specialty is to enable him /her to function as a consultant in the respective physiotherapy specialty.

The programme shall focus on clinical reasoning, problem solving and measurement of treatment outcome, emphasizing on the recent diagnostic & therapeutic trends in Manipulative Therapy, Neuro-Development Approach & Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapeutic skills.

Course objectives

At the end of the course the candidate shall be able to:

  • Acquire the in-depth Knowledge of structure and function of human body related to the respective branch of specialty.
  • Acquire the in-depth knowledge of movement dysfunction of human body, cause thereof, & of principles which underlines the use of physiotherapeutic interventions, for restoring movement dysfunction towards normalcy.
  • Demonstrate ability to critically appraise recent physiotherapeutic and related medical literature from journals, adopt diagnostic & therapeutic based on it.
  • Demonstrate skill in Physical & Functional diagnosis pertaining to patient under care.
  • Demonstrate ability to make clinical decision & select appropriate outcome measures based on the comprehensive knowledge of theoretical aspects of specialty.
  • Demonstrate an expertise in evidence-based skill in the management of movement dysfunction.
  • Demonstrate an expertise in health promotion & quality restoration of functional movement pertaining to specialty.
  • Planning and implementation of treatment programme adequately and appropriately for all clinical conditions related to respective specialty in acute and chronic stage, in intensive care, indoor and outdoor institutional care, independent practice, on fields of sports and community and during disaster and natural calamities.
  • Demonstrate Proficiency in planning and executing Physiotherapy services and teaching technology skills.
  • Demonstrate managerial and administrative skills.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge of legislation applicable to compensation for functional disability & appropriate certification.

Eligibility

The course is open for physiotherapists holding a bachelor’ degree from a recognized university with completion of six months compulsory internship
  • Candidate must be Indian national.
  • Student who have obtained Bachelor’s degree from Agricultural University and Distance Education are not eligible as per DMER/MUHS guidelines.
  • Course is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik.
  • Eligibility of the candidates admitted is granted by MUHS, Nashik University an Institute takes no responsibility for the same. It is not assured by the institute at the time of admission that university will grant eligibility to the candidate.

Selection50% seats are for candidates who have passed BPTh from University in Maharashtra; selected through PG-CET conducted by Directorate of Medical Education & Research ,Government of Maharashtra and 50% seats are for candidates from all over India including Maharashtra who have passed BPTh and selected through common Entrance Test conducted by this Institute.

4. Diploma in Rehabilitation Physiotherapy –[DR(PT)]

This course is affiliated to S.N.D.T. Women’s University Mumbai.

Course Objectives:

  1. To train qualified Physiotherapists in multidisciplinary team approach and participation in the service programme with emphasis on Institute-oriented and Community-based rehabilitation approaches.
  2. To focus on Rehabilitation management and Research, including Departmental Administration, Research methodology & Biostatistics and Medical Rehabilitation including all aspects.
  3. To impart clinical training in use of advanced Physiotherapeutic techniques and choice of physical agents and exercise prescription. Training also includes indications and uses of aids & appliances.
  4. To submit a Staff-guided dissertation which is oriented to Research planning, design and implementation as a partial fulfillment for the course.

Eligibility

Candidates who have passed BPTh from recognized Universities along with 6 months internship are eligible for the course.

Selection: Selection is done through C.E.T. conducted by this Institute.

  • The course is affiliated to S.N.D.T Women’s University, Mumbai.
  • The course is open only for women holding Bachelor’s Degree in Physiotherapy from Recognized University/Government Institute with completion of six months internship.
  • Candidates who have obtained their Bachelor Degree in Physiotherapy through Agricultural Universities or Distance Education are not eligible for admission.
  • A minimum of 40% marks have to be secured in the CET for eligibility.
  • Eligibility of the candidates admitted is granted by SNDT Women’s University and Institute takes no responsibility for the same. It is not assured by the institute at the time of admission that university will grant eligibility to the candidate.

5. MASTER IN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY – (MOTh)

This course is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik.The MOTh course is intended to prepare candidates for assumption of responsibilities in positions of leadership as:-

  • Specialized Practitioner.
  • Researchers.
  • Teachers.
  • Administrators.
  • Supervisors.
  • Consultants.

Objectives of the programme:-

To achieve the above mentioned goals and at the end of the course shall be able to acquire:-

    ** Knowledge
  • In depth knowledge of human body, structure and function pertaining to respective specialty.
  • Movement dysfunction of human body with its etiology and principles of Occupational therapy intervention and management for restoring movement and occupational dysfunction as it relates to occupational performance.
    ** Develop expertise in the following:-
  • Critical evaluation of Occupational therapy and related medical literature for adopting new theories and technologies in occupational diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Using various appropriate OT assessment for measuring occupational dysfunction and impact of OT intervention.
  • Gathering evidence based documentation support for the practice of OT in respective specialties.
  • Developing new models of OT practice for health promotion and gainful occupational performance.
  • Promoting and expanding scope of OT intervention relating to specialty in different age groups and aspects of human life.
  • Acquire knowledge of latest technology in teaching and skills.
  • Managerial and administrative skills.
  • Formulation of legislative aspects of OT assessments, interventions, compensation and certification.

6. Diploma in Rehabilitation: Occupational Therapy (DROT)

This course is affiliated to SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai

Course Objectives:

  1. To train qualified Occupational Therapists in functioning as part of a multidisciplinary team using interdisciplinary co-ordination and Comprehensive Rehabilitation Approach.
  2. To impart hands–on training in use of advanced Occupational Therapeutic Techniques using evidence based practice and clinical reasoning with emphasis on Institute based and Community based rehabilitation approaches.
  3. To train the Occupational Therapist in Rehabilitation management, , Research Methodology ,Biostatics and Departmental Administration as well as all aspects of Rehabilitation.
  4. Orientation to research design and implementation through extrapolation of research findings, achieved as part of the course through submission and presentation of dissertation which forms part of the scheme of examination.

Number of seats available: - Fifteen (15) Selection:- selection by C.E.T. conducted by the institute
Eligibility

  • The course is open only for women holding Bachelor Degree in Occupational Therapy from Recognized University/Government Institute with completion of six months internship.
  • Candidates who have completed their Bachelor Degree in Occupational Therapy through Non-Agricultural Universities or distance education are not eligible for admission.
  • A minimum of 40% marks have to be secured in the CET for eligibility.

7. Bachelor in Prosthetics and Orthotics-( B.P.O)

This course is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. The course has an engineering cum medical base having its application in loco motor Handicapped

Course Objectives

  1. To train students in manufacturing and fitting various types of orthopedic aids and appliances needed for the physically disabled.
  2. To ensure that at the end of the course, the professional can function.
  3. Independently and provide services to the disabled persons.
  4. And be equally proficient in service at multinational companies with fitting centers.

Selection

50% seats are for candidates from all over India including Maharashtra who have passed their H.S.C. (10 + 2) Examination, selection of which is done by this Institute through Entrance Test.

50% are for candidates who have passed their H.S.C. (10 + 2) Examination from Colleges/Schools from Maharashtra State, selection of which is done through the Common Entrance Test conducted by Directorate of Medical Education and Research ,Mumbai, Maharashtra, i.e. MHT-CET.

Duration: 4 years, Commencing in August

8. Master of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics (M.P.O.)

This course affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik.

Programme Objectives

  1. To train manpower to act as teachers for B.P.O.
  2. TO orient the B.P.O. graduates. about research in the field of Prosthetics & Orthotics.
  3. To make young graduates familiar with new technology and technological advances.
  4. To train the B.P.O. graduates in Bio-Mechanical analysis of various Orthotic & Prosthetic devices fitted on the patients.
  5. To harness the potential of B.P.O. graduates and use it in problem solving.

Candidates who have passed their BPO course from any Institute, recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India- New Delhi are eligible for admission to the MPO course as per the prevailing rules and guidelines. The students pursuing Masters in Prosthetics and Orthotics are supposed to work on dissertation topics of their choice and submit their thesis within three months prior to their appearing in the final examination apart from classroom training and clinical work. There is a University Examination at the end of each year and the degree of MPO will be conferred after the candidate has successfully passed the final exams at the end of the second year.

9. Diploma in Hearing Language and Speech (DHLS):

Diploma in Hearing Language and Speech (DHLS) has been launched by the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore(A.I.I.S.H.) under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. All India Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is one of the study centers for the same.

Objectives: Effective implementation of National Program on Prevention and Control of Deafness and Rehabilitation of communication disorder.

Special Features:Classes are conducted through video conferencing system in collaboration with A.I.I.S.H. where classes are imparted by video conferencing mode.

Duration - 11 months, commencing in September
